Day 53/112 Falkirk Innovation

Before we head to the Scottish Highlands where we have an Airbnb booked, we are staying in Falkirk just outside of Edinburgh. A bit of an uninspiring, industrial area, however we did fill a day at two really interesting sights. The Scottish Canals have been restored in recent times, including new canals to join them up. At Falkirk, in a new canal area there are two massive sculptures called the Kelpies, to celebrate Scotland’s horse history. Over 30 metres tall they are really impressive.

We then went to the Falkirk Wheel, the only boat lift in the world to move boats between a 35m gap in the canal. This replaced 11 individual locks. The area also has water play areas for the kids. Loralei and Holly had a go water walking in large balls. We ended up spending most of the afternoon here watching boats go up and down and also through a traditional lock.
